Hospice Chaplain / Spiritual Care Counselor

Park City, Utah•Part-time
About the Job
Hospice | Paid Per Visit | Mileage Reimbursement Provided | Wasatch Back
We are looking for a compassionate and dependable Hospice Chaplain/Spiritual Care Counselor to join our growing hospice team and serve patients and families throughout the Wasatch Back, including the Park City area.
Hospice care is about caring for the whole person; physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Our chaplain is an important member of the interdisciplinary team, providing a calm and supportive presence for patients and families as they navigate serious illness, end-of-life concerns, grief, and loss.
We are looking for someone who understands that spiritual care looks different for every person. The right candidate will meet patients and families where they are, honoring their individual beliefs, traditions, values, and preferences without judgment.
This is a paid-per-visit position, and mileage is reimbursed for work-related travel throughout the service area.
What You’ll Do
As a Hospice Chaplain/Spiritual Care Counselor, you will provide individualized spiritual and emotional support to hospice patients and their families based on their needs, wishes, and beliefs.
  • Assess the spiritual and emotional needs of hospice patients and families.
  • Provide spiritual support, counseling, presence, and companionship consistent with each patient’s and family’s beliefs and preferences.
  • Offer support related to serious illness, end-of-life concerns, anticipatory grief, death, and bereavement.
  • Develop individualized spiritual plans of care and communicate identified needs to the hospice team.
  • Participate as an active member of the interdisciplinary group (IDG) and collaborate with nurses, social workers, aides, physicians, and other members of the care team.
  • Support family members and caregivers before and following a patient’s death as appropriate.
  • Provide or assist with memorial, funeral, or other spiritual services when requested and appropriate.
  • Coordinate with community clergy, faith leaders, or other spiritual resources when requested by patients or families.
  • Respect and support patients who follow a particular faith tradition as well as those who are spiritual, questioning, uncertain, or do not identify with a religion.
  • Provide bereavement follow-up services as assigned.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation of visits, assessments, interventions, and changes in patient or family needs.
  • Participate in team meetings, IDG conferences, and other hospice activities as appropriate.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow hospice policies and professional standards.
What We’re Looking For
  • Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology or appropriate education/certification in chaplaincy, pastoral care, or spiritual ministry.
  • Certificate or degree in pastoral ministry or a related field preferred.
  • Hospice, healthcare, chaplaincy, pastoral care, bereavement, or end-of-life experience preferred.
  • Two years of experience as a chaplain or spiritual counselor preferred.
  • Compassionate, patient, and comfortable supporting people experiencing serious illness, grief, death, and loss.
  • Ability to provide spiritual care that respects a wide range of religious, cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs.
  • Strong listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the community while collaborating closely with the interdisciplinary hospice team.
  • Good judgment and the ability to respond calmly and appropriately during emotionally difficult situations.
  • Dependable, organized, and able to complete documentation in a timely manner.
  • Current driver’s license, automobile insurance, and reliable transportation.
The Person We Hope to Find
For this position, presence matters.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing a chaplain can offer isn’t an answer; it is the willingness to sit beside someone during a difficult moment, listen to their story, and allow them to talk about the things that matter most to them.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable meeting people exactly where they are. Some of our patients may find great comfort in their faith. Others may be questioning, angry, afraid, uncertain, or simply want someone who will listen. Some may not have a religious faith at all.
Our role is never to impose a belief, but to understand what brings meaning, comfort, peace, and connection to each individual patient and family.
We want someone who can bring warmth and compassion into a patient’s home while also communicating well with the rest of the hospice team. What you learn through your conversations with patients and families can be an important part of helping all of us provide truly individualized, whole-person care.
About the Position
This position serves hospice patients and families throughout the Wasatch Back, including the Park City area.
The position is paid per visit, allowing for flexibility based on patient needs and census. Because travel throughout the service area is part of the role, mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related travel.
You will work independently in the community while being part of an interdisciplinary hospice team that genuinely cares about its patients, families, and one another.
As our hospice continues to grow, we are adding team members so we can continue providing the level of support our patients and families deserve.
If you are someone who feels called to support people during one of life’s most meaningful and vulnerable transitions and believe in providing spiritual care with compassion, dignity, respect, and an open heart, we would love to meet you.
